Petsmart Howl-O-Ween Celebration Another Big Success

Thanks to Rob and everyone at Petsmart in Carson City for another fun Halloween celebration.  Gizmo was a frog this year, and he had a blast playing with lots of other tiny tots.  We had some really cool costumes this time, including a punk rock band, twin pumpkins, and a bee keeper & her bees.  The pet parade was a lot of fun, and everyone got goodie bags with lots of treats.  Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to everyone who came out and supported the local charities.

Stokes Castle in Austin, Nevada

Stokes Castle in Austin, Nevada

Stokes Castle is an interesting piece of Nevada history.  Construction was begun in 1896, patterned after a tower outside Rome, and built from native granite and set with rock wedging and clay mortar.  Ancestors of the men who built it still reside in Austin and are happy to share their family histories.  Anson Phelps Stokes, miner, banker, and railroad magnate, intended the structure to serve as his summer home, but sadly, the Gold Rush, which had seen Austin swell to a population of nearly 10,000, was coming to an end.  The family occupied the Castle only once, for a period of about a month during the summer of 1897 before selling out of the Nevada mining industry and moving on, never to return.  Today, Austin is classified as a "living ghost town,"  with a population of approximately 340 people.  In addition to Stokes Castle, there are three beautiful churches and countless old buildings filled with character.  Historians consider it one of the best examples of an early Nevada mining town.  It is well worth the stop, and you will find lots of great photo opportunities.

11th Annual Fundraiser - "A Ride To Remember

Ed Hill

We were pleased to take part for the third year in  "A Ride to Remember."  Begun in 2000 by Mary Wright to honor Sally Knowles, the fund raising event it now in its 11th year and going strong.  Thanks to Megan Hunewill for inviting us out to photograph the event.  Festivities this year included great Bar-Be-Que and live music.  Fund raising was done through a walk, a run, raffles, auctions, a trail ride, and a trail trial.  Held at the Hunewill Ranch in beautiful Smith Valley, the weather was great.  Rides were sanctioned by both ATTA and NQHA, and representatives of the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Nevada were on hand to collect almost 10,000 in donations.  Congratulations on a successful event!

The Photographer's Prayer

Oh God, as I bring my subject into focus and prepare to make each portrait, nerver let me forget that I'm creating treasures for some family, a keepsake for loved ones. Make me sensitive to the qualities and virtues of others, that I may draw out into the light the beautiful radiant belongings of their hearts.

Help me to be an artist, collecting the beauty of every soul, the glow of youth, the gentleness, the laughter or tears of each life that is precious in Thy sight. Deeper than a means of livelihood, give me the perspective to see my photographer's art as a service to others, making life richer and more memorable.

And, dear Lord, between the lights and shadows, the ups and downs and the rolling years, keep me from getting out of focus or off center, so that my life and work may be framed with dignity and colored with contentment ...

AMEN
