Draft Horse Classic 2012 Photos Now Available to View

After literally planning for an entire year, I was all excited about spending a week in Grass Valley, California to attend the Draft Horse Classic.  Sometimes, the stars just don't line up right, and sometimes one obstacle after another throws itself in your path.  Apparently, this was going to be one of those events, times two.  Always the optimist, or at least not one eager to admit defeat, I hung in there, and at the last minute, thanks mostly to my friend, who always has a plan, I was able to attend on Saturday.  My first time in attendance, I had a wonderful time and have already added Draft Horse Classic to my 2013 calendar.

Steven Thompson made a special effort to be my host and play tour guide, which made for a very enriched experience.  The Nevada County Fairgrounds was beautiful, with lots of trees for shade for our dogs.  I had the chance between shows to check out the Harvest Fair, with all the craft booths and food vendors, and to have a nice lunch.  I enjoyed seeing the railroad museum, and loved the history museum, as told through photographs.  I even found time to check out the competition at the "Art at the Classic."  Lots of great artwork was on display.

A special thank you to Jeff Shinn and his lovely Aunties for inviting us to join them at the barn.  To me, it is always fascinating to see how much hard work and dedication, and expense, goes into a production like this, and I really appreciated the opportunity to hang out.

Of all the sights and sounds, the horses were, of course, my favorite.  Just don't ask me to narrow it down to which horses, or what entertainment acts I liked the best.  I was fortunate enough to have an understanding guide who encouraged me to stay and watch it all, even while he practiced sleeping standing up!  I think the announcers did a fantastic job, and I was very happy to see Bill Adams and his mules.  I had a wonderful time, and I learned so much.  It was also nice to see so many familiar faces.  It always makes me homesick for Texas to be around horse people.  Everyone was very warm and inviting.  Can't wait for next year - September 19 through September 22, 2013!

I hope everyone will stop by our gallery and have a peek at the 400 photos I narrowed it down to.  Please have a look and let me know what you think.  I always appreciate your feedback.  If you see anything you are interested in , give me a call directly for discount pricing.

Photos Now Available for NEDA's Night Rider

First Place -Beats Walkin' - Driven by Red Black

Steven Thompson & his group NEDA held their annual Night Rider Event this Labor Day weekend in Silver Springs, Nevada, under the light of a beautiful full moon.  Nine riders and one driver turned out this year to participate.  The weather was absolutely amazing, with clear skies, cool temperature, and no wind.  Group members came early to share a meal and good conversation before heading out to enjoy a lovely sunset.  I captured twilight photos of the group as they rode through the desert.  Everyone stopped by for dessert at the end of their ride.  It was very nice to see all the familiar faces.  We look forward to seeing everyone in Austin.

Congratulations to the Winners:

Thirteen springs run on their property. Through their canyon they created a series of ponds from which they generate hydroelectricity. Dan's storied career as a US Forest Service Ranger led to another in conservation, in defense of wild lands and wildlife. Dan Heinz passed away on April 30, 2012. Proceeds from this ride will be donated to the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers in Dan's honor.

NEDA Winnemucca Ride Photos Available

Red Black driving Beats Walkin'

Following a quick two day break at home, it was off to Winnemucca for Mule Days!  The event was much smaller this year than it has been in the past.  Only 15 mules ran their endurance race, and NEDA had two drivers and six riders in their race.  Always a tough course, it was a challenge for everyone.  I hear the views are spectacular though.  Maybe someday ...

Many of NEDA's events hold a special place in my heart, and Winnemucca is definitely one of them.  In 2009, after working with the group for three months, we were invited to Mule Days.  Apparently, we brought the rain with us, and we were given shelter with the gang. Later we were invited to the Martin for their traditional post ride dinner.  It was the first time since leaving Texas I felt connected, and I have been pretty much hooked every since.

Photos from this year's Winnemucca Mule Days feature the Endurance Race for both NEDA and the mules, and include some on the track at the finish line, which was a first for me.  It was really exciting to be at the finish this year.  In the past, I was still printing.  I hope to be there again next year.

NEDA Hazen Ride Photos Available

Beautiful vista from the trail in Hazen, Nevada.

My Memorial Day Weekend was spent among friends and family in Hazen this year at NEDA's Annual Black Butte Endurance Ride.  Although it was a small turn out, with only 12 riders and drivers, it was a whole lot of fun.  I got to head out the night before and see some of the spectacular trail and enjoy dinner at the Black Bear Dinner in Fernley with Steven Thompson and some of his family, friend Red Black, and even my Mom, who was visiting from Texas.  Tent camping that night was exciting, including a call at 2:00 am from the tent next door - "Kitty, it's Mom.  Could you please come get the tent off my head?"  At least she is a good sport.  She is already looking forward to next year!

The wind died down, and the weather was beautiful for the ride Monday morning.  I hiked a half mile into a canyon to get some amazing shots!  Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and some great company.  Now, off to Winnemucca on Thursday!

Always fun to camp at Hazen!

Results for NEDA's Spring Fling

First Place:  Dave Cootware

Second Place: ET Thomas
Third Place:  Alisanne Steele

I joined Steven Thompson and NEDA for their Annual Spring Fling endurance ride in Sliver Springs, Nevada this past Sunday, and as always, had a blast!  This was my fourth Spring Fling to photograph, and I swear they just keep getting better every year.  Twenty-eight riders and drivers turned out for the event, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous.  Trail included a loop through the park, and I was able to capture some great shots, with both mountain views and some with the lake in the background.  Heidi Siegel celebrated her 79th birthday by coming in 5th place!  Hiking back out, I had the added bonus of photographing an owl.  I'm glad she was occupied with the baby in her nest and not eating Gizmo!

Thanks to everyone for their support!

Ride Results - NEDA Valentine Ride

First Place:  Dave Cootware on Lia

Second Place: Red Black driving Beats Walkin'

Third Place: Steven Thompson driving Ebony

NEDA hosted its Valentine Ride in Silver Springs this past Sunday.  The weather forecast called for wind, but it turned out to be a beautiful day.  Thirty-eight riders turned out for the event, split fairly evenly between 10 Mile Fun Riders and 20 Milers.  Great trail included a jaunt through Lahontan State Park.  As always, the potluck provided an opportunity for participants to visit after the ride.  NEDA provided the main dish of Lasanga, and there were tons of Valentine Sweets for dessert.  It was exciting to see so many new faces as guests at the ride and to welcome a few new members to NEDA.

Congratulations to the Valentine Ride Winners:
First Place - Dave Cootware riding Lia
Second Place to Red Black driving Beats Walkin'
Third Place - Steven Thompson driving Ebony
