After literally planning for an entire year, I was all excited about spending a week in Grass Valley, California to attend the Draft Horse Classic. Sometimes, the stars just don't line up right, and sometimes one obstacle after another throws itself in your path. Apparently, this was going to be one of those events, times two. Always the optimist, or at least not one eager to admit defeat, I hung in there, and at the last minute, thanks mostly to my friend, who always has a plan, I was able to attend on Saturday. My first time in attendance, I had a wonderful time and have already added Draft Horse Classic to my 2013 calendar.
Steven Thompson made a special effort to be my host and play tour guide, which made for a very enriched experience. The Nevada County Fairgrounds was beautiful, with lots of trees for shade for our dogs. I had the chance between shows to check out the Harvest Fair, with all the craft booths and food vendors, and to have a nice lunch. I enjoyed seeing the railroad museum, and loved the history museum, as told through photographs. I even found time to check out the competition at the "Art at the Classic." Lots of great artwork was on display.
A special thank you to Jeff Shinn and his lovely Aunties for inviting us to join them at the barn. To me, it is always fascinating to see how much hard work and dedication, and expense, goes into a production like this, and I really appreciated the opportunity to hang out.
Of all the sights and sounds, the horses were, of course, my favorite. Just don't ask me to narrow it down to which horses, or what entertainment acts I liked the best. I was fortunate enough to have an understanding guide who encouraged me to stay and watch it all, even while he practiced sleeping standing up! I think the announcers did a fantastic job, and I was very happy to see Bill Adams and his mules. I had a wonderful time, and I learned so much. It was also nice to see so many familiar faces. It always makes me homesick for Texas to be around horse people. Everyone was very warm and inviting. Can't wait for next year - September 19 through September 22, 2013!
I hope everyone will stop by our gallery and have a peek at the 400 photos I narrowed it down to. Please have a look and let me know what you think. I always appreciate your feedback. If you see anything you are interested in , give me a call directly for discount pricing.
