Highway 50 Wagon Train Photos Now Available

Jeannette Smart with Skeeter, Chino, & Gizmo

I am proud to announce we have officially completed our second Highway 50 Wagon Train, and what an amazing time it was!  I want to take the opportunity to thank my dear friend Steven Thompson for inviting me to be a part of all this fun and excitement.  This year was even more special, since Scott joined the ranks of "Team Myers" and helped with harnessing.  Jerry Myers did an amazing job.  Thanks to Steven, and Jerry, and Jerry's wife Terry, his daughter Jeanette, and Rachel Anderson for allowing me to tag along.  As always, I had a blast!

This year was the 63rd Annual Highway 50 Wagon Train.  It  kicked off in Zephyr Cove, Nevada with a rendezvous on Saturday, June 2, and it ended with an "End of the Trail Party" in Placerville, California on Saturday, June 9.  In between was a fantastic week, filled with friends, food, fun, and memories that will last a lifetime!  Chino, our 3 month old Chihuahua, made his first trip on a wagon train, and held up like a trooper.  It was actually his dad Gizmo that had me worried, as he was sick for two days.  Thanks so much to Sheryl, and Jeannette, and Terry, and Annette, and everyone on train for all your good advise and well wishes, and to Steven for the tip about the yogurt, which is what I think finally made Gizmo better.

I have already been asked to give a lecture and slide presentation on Wagon Train, and I wish I could have all the participants there with me when I do.  Everyone in the audience is always so impressed with the journey, and they ask so many good questions.  The organizer who asked me to do the presentation had a tough question; what was my favorite part?  Wow!  that's a really hard one.  The animals.  I am always amazed with how beautiful they are, how intelligent they are, and how hard they all work.  And the people. Some of these great folks I get to see only a hand full of times a year, and really enjoy getting to see everyone.  It is not just the social aspect of catching up on lives and swapping stories though.  Especially this year, in the snow on Echo Summit, it was the way people came together to help out when someone needed a hand.  It was fun for me personally to wrangle the dogs and to look for the photo opportunities that were  just a little better.  I loved the two days I spent on the wagon, getting close up details of drivers, horses, wranglers, outriders, and passengers.  And I loved the afternoon I spent in "the box," seeing things from a completely different point of view. (Thanks Terry & Jerry for that!)  But if I had to site just one single moment, I think it would be when everything clicked into place, and I realized the harmony of man and horse, working together, as one unit, just doing what needed to be done - no thought, just instinct.  That is how our ancestors settled this land, accomplishing great tasks one simple step at a time.

If you have the chance, I strongly encourage you to get involved.  Bring your horse and spend a week, or bring your kids and change their lives.  For more information on this fantastic journey, visit their website at:

CSHA's Groveland Photos Now Available

Charlene Schramm, Cindi Paine, & Jack Jimenez

Projections Photography traveled to Groveland, California last weekend to photograph CSHA's two day trail trial.  This was our third year to attend the event, and our first year to camp.  Special thanks to Trish Clark for getting us on CSHA's calendar early this year so we could come hang out and enjoy the whole weekend!  This is always our busy season, and in years past, we have had to charge from one event to the next, so it was nice to have extra time to visit.  Held at a beautiful location just outside Yosemite, this event always draws a nice crowd, and this year's turn out was really great, with 73 riders on Saturday and 64 riders on Sunday.  You couldn't have asked for better weather, with clear skies and much cooler temperatures than last year.  The camp cooks always provide delicious meals, and everyone is friendly and welcoming.  Thanks to our host and ride manager for Day 1, Nellie Moore, and to the whole Clark family, including Trish who managed Day 2.  So much hard work and dedication goes into planning an event like this, and they did a fantastic job.  This is a great organization, and if you are interested in obtaining more information, I encourage you to visit their website at:

Images from both days of the event are now available to view in my gallery.  Please stop by and check them out.  I hope you will let me know what you think!  Riders, don't forget, if you want to place an order, write down your image numbers from the site and call me directly to receive Special Ride Day Discount Pricing.

Dan's storied career as a US Forest Service Ranger led to another in conservation, in defense of wild lands and wildlife. Dan Heinz passed away on April 30, 2012. Proceeds from this ride will be donated to the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers in Dan's honor.

NEDA Winnemucca Ride Photos Available

Red Black driving Beats Walkin'

Following a quick two day break at home, it was off to Winnemucca for Mule Days!  The event was much smaller this year than it has been in the past.  Only 15 mules ran their endurance race, and NEDA had two drivers and six riders in their race.  Always a tough course, it was a challenge for everyone.  I hear the views are spectacular though.  Maybe someday ...

Many of NEDA's events hold a special place in my heart, and Winnemucca is definitely one of them.  In 2009, after working with the group for three months, we were invited to Mule Days.  Apparently, we brought the rain with us, and we were given shelter with the gang. Later we were invited to the Martin for their traditional post ride dinner.  It was the first time since leaving Texas I felt connected, and I have been pretty much hooked every since.

Photos from this year's Winnemucca Mule Days feature the Endurance Race for both NEDA and the mules, and include some on the track at the finish line, which was a first for me.  It was really exciting to be at the finish this year.  In the past, I was still printing.  I hope to be there again next year.

NEDA Hazen Ride Photos Available

Beautiful vista from the trail in Hazen, Nevada.

My Memorial Day Weekend was spent among friends and family in Hazen this year at NEDA's Annual Black Butte Endurance Ride.  Although it was a small turn out, with only 12 riders and drivers, it was a whole lot of fun.  I got to head out the night before and see some of the spectacular trail and enjoy dinner at the Black Bear Dinner in Fernley with Steven Thompson and some of his family, friend Red Black, and even my Mom, who was visiting from Texas.  Tent camping that night was exciting, including a call at 2:00 am from the tent next door - "Kitty, it's Mom.  Could you please come get the tent off my head?"  At least she is a good sport.  She is already looking forward to next year!

The wind died down, and the weather was beautiful for the ride Monday morning.  I hiked a half mile into a canyon to get some amazing shots!  Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and some great company.  Now, off to Winnemucca on Thursday!

Always fun to camp at Hazen!
