Shooting Challenge - August 26, 2012 - Sunflowers

Title:  Weeping Sunflower
Date Taken:  08-20-06
Location:  London, England
F-Stop:  f/3.7
Exposure Time:  1/350 Sec.
ISO:  400
Focal Length:  380mm
Photographer:  Kitty Carlisle

Several people have suggested I show flowers.  I love working in my garden, and back in Texas, I had over 100 rose bushes in my yard.  I really appreciate the beauty of flowers.  Honest.  But I find it more exciting to capture the bugs, and the birds, and the bees.  Quite frankly, I got sick to death of the sunflower when everyone had it in their kitchen, representing all that joy and sunshine.  It was just over kill.  But as photographers, our job is to see the ordinary in extraordinary situations.  Or is that to see the extraordinary in ordinary things?  Either way, we try to convey our emotions through the images we capture.  In my opinion, the above sunflowers were tired.  It was late in the day, and late in the season. The weather had been dreary. What does the image say to you?  I would love to see what the subject of sunflowers brings to your mind.  I welcome your comments and photos.

Shooting Challenge - August 19, 2012 - Faceless Fotos

Every photographer knows the magic behind the perfect smile, but sometimes the real power is in the emotion captured without the pearly whites.  For this week's Shooting Challenge, consider telling the story with other body parts, emphasizing location, detail, motion, mood, and such.  Here are a few ideas from the Horse World to get you started.  Please share some of yours by responding.  Please feel free to comment on likes and dislikes as well.

Sierra Ghost Riders Wagon Train Photos Are Now Available for Viewing

Sierra Ghost Riders sponsored another great wagon train and horse camping trip in the beautiful Sierra Mountains this past week, and what a wonderful event it was!  Special thanks to my dear friend Steven Thompson for introducing me to this great group and inviting me to tag along.  Much appreciation to teamster Jerry Myers and his wife Terry for making room for Scott and I and our two Monster Dogs, Gizmo & Chino.  It was good to see Terry's sister, Kathy, and her husband Gene again this year.  Their beautiful wagon and their mules Dixie & Jesse were my most popular subjects this year, since the view never changes out the back of the wagon!  I was also happy to get to spend some time with Terry's nephew Nicholas this year.  Best of luck to you in all your endeavors.  Don't forget to look us up if you are in need of official taste testers, especially if you wind up in Spain!  Rachel, you and your Mom & your Dad all get great big thank yous from everyone.  You are a giant help and a pleasure to spend time with.  You looked great driving this week too.  Good luck to you in your upcoming year.  Scott gets kudos this year for helping with harnessing and for riding Garth, the Cadillac of horses, for 13 miles on his very first ride.  Currently, he is still recovering!

Those of us on the outside often forget just how much hard work and dedication goes into the planning and execution of a task as large as a wagon train, and I wanted to personally congratulate this year's Wagon Master, Annette Nylander, for doing such an outstanding job.  I had a great time and look forward to doing it again soon.

Scott got to hitch his star to several wagons this year and really enjoyed going out with others.  I went out twice with Steven & Jerry, and both times the scenery was beautiful.  I think my personal favorite was the first day of rolling, when we traveled about 15 miles from Bordertown to Dry Camp, through gorgeous Dog Valley.  I even got to sit in the box and get some great photographs!  I can see how this kind of fun gets addictive.  Play Day was a lot of fun this year too.  It was great to see everyone work their way through the obstacle course, which was very well planned.  It consisted of challenges riders and drivers on the trail might be up against every day.  I was happy to see Matthew & Glen drive the course, and as always, it was exciting to watch Steven take all the Little Girls through as well!  The trail was fun, and the company was great.  It was sad to have to say good bye.  Can't wait for next year!

Photos from NASTR Trail Trials now Available

NASTR, the Nevada All-Star Trail Riders, sponsored their "Trailer Trials" trail trial on Saturday. July 28, 2012 as a fundraiser to help pay for a trailer for the group.  ATTA approved, the event was held at the Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City.  This was my first time out to the facility, and it was a really great place.  If you haven't had the chance, check out the historic site, which is located at 4901 Carson River Road.  I hear there are some nice trails.  Fifty-three riders came out to support the group.  There was good food, lots of prizes, and even a "horseless" course, which was a lot of fun.  Thanks to NASTR, especially Lou & Michaele, for inviting us out.  Your support is greatly appreciated!
